Well into our sixth week of “stay home” orders here in California and while it’s been hard to focus with all the kiddos (and the hubby) suddenly home, multiple Zoom calls for work and school, and more rounds of dirty dishes than usual, I’ve managed to come up with a new quilt design, that I absolutely LOVE! I’m so excited to share the Journey Home Quilt with you all and am working to have the PDF pattern available to you here by mid May!
I am hoping to put together my first QAL for this pattern starting sometime in mid June, where I will go into more detail, but I wanted to give a brief bit of background regarding the importance of value in this design. As with most quilt designs, there are countless ways in which you could layout your colors in order to create different effects and highlight different design elements. I couldn’t possibly give you all the options here, however, I have put together a few samples to demonstrate a variety of layouts that all have one thing in common. Can you guess? Yes, all these palettes/layouts, consider value in the layout.
The light, medium, and dark value colors, while very different in each quilt, are consistently and intentionally placed in order to create the overall effectiveness of the design. I like to think of it as a general formula of sorts…..the light values form the inner squares, medium and/or dark values form the star points, medium values make up the star centers and outer star points, and finally, the dark values are used in the star tip corners. The below, black and white image of the featured quilt at the top, allows you to really see the value intensity without getting hung up on color.
Is this the only way to layout your quilt? Well, no, you could try an opposite value version I suppose, or just abandon the idea of value consideration all together. In the pattern, I include more about value, along with a coloring sheet that you can copy in order to play with as many color options as you can dream up, oh, and fabric requirements for 5 different sizes…… and of course detailed instructions and diagrams.
Understanding value is ongoing for me and this design has really helped me gain a deeper awareness of how it works. I look forward to sharing more with you in a future Journey Home QAL. Stay tuned friends, follow more detailed progress and process on my IG account @bloomingpoppies, and thanks for stopping by.
